The snow leopard is an endangered species. Its main threats include poaching, declining prey populations, human-wildlife conflict, and climate change.
Where It Lives in Uzbekistan
The snow leopard inhabits the high mountains of the Western Tien Shan and the Pamir-Alay ranges. Camera traps help researchers monitor its population and behavior in protected areas.
Conservation Efforts
Uzbekistan participates in international snow leopard conservation programs. Memorandums have been signed with neighboring countries to support joint monitoring and the protection of the species' natural habitat.

Observed annually on October 23, this day aims to raise awareness about the conservation of the snow leopard and the protection of mountain ecosystems.

- Only 4,000–6,000 snow leopards remain in the wild. In Uzbekistan, their population is critically low, with only 50–100 individuals.
- The snow leopard is listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and the Red Data Book of Uzbekistan.
- Lives at incredible altitudes of 5,500–6,000 meters above sea level.
- Thanks to its remarkable strength and agility, it easily navigates steep mountain slopes and can leap up to 15 meters in a single jump.

In February 2024, a major international conference was held in Samarkand. Scientists and ministers from 100 countries discussed how to protect animals that migrate — that is, travel huge distances. These are various birds, fish and even big cats.
The main motto of the conference: “Nature knows no borders”. This means that animals and birds do not look at a map and do not know that their long walk may end in another country. That is why people from all over the world must work together to help them.
The rules for protecting such “travelers” were created back in 1979. Today they are followed by Uzbekistan and 132 other countries.
At the meeting they explained that many animals are struggling now because of environmental pollution. This conference became a very important event for all of Central Asia. It will help preserve the wildlife of our planet!
